One of the most-asked questions about chiropractors is whether they are doctors. There should be no doubt that chiropractors are doctors as they have a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree; however, there are some basic differences between chiropractors and medical doctors. This page compares the treatment techniques, qualifications, specialization, and education of chiropractors and medical doctors.
Treatment Techniques
Chiropractors treat patients by adjusting and manipulating their spine and other body parts. Chiropractic care aims to maximize the alignment of the spine and other joints. This helps improve circulation in the body, reduces inflammation, and relaxes the muscles.
Chiropractic care can involve different types of treatments, including electrical muscle therapy, physiotherapy, acupuncture, manual therapy, and massage therapy. In addition, medical doctors can prescribe medication and perform surgeries, while chiropractic care does not rely on invasive procedures or medication.
In some states, chiropractors are permitted by law to perform minor surgeries related to their areas of specialty. For example, some chiropractors can perform manipulation under anesthesia, also known as MUA, which is a minor surgical procedure that is done to relieve joint stiffness.
For most techniques, chiropractors use their hands instead of other instruments to diagnose and treat the patient. Manual therapy is rare with medical doctors.
Medicine Prescription
Doctors can prescribe all types of medicine under the scope of their practice, but chiropractors are not permitted to give prescription medication to patients. Generally, chiropractors can only prescribe food concentrates, over-the-counter (OTC) medication, or natural medication.
Chiropractors mainly focus on recovery through spinal manipulation and other forms of therapy, which boost the body’s natural healing process. Their practice requires no medication other than some anti-inflammatory or pain relief drugs.
Education and Training
To become a chiropractor, a person is required to complete a bachelor’s program (B.Sc), so they can be eligible for chiropractic school. In chiropractic school, the candidates must pass a series of exams to obtain their license. After getting their license, chiropractors join an existing practice or start their own.
In comparison, doctors need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from a medical school. They must have a bachelor’s degree to be eligible to enter medical school. During medical school, students can be required to take a medical license examination. Once they obtain a license, they can pursue residency training and specialize in any medical field. In most cases, doctors can also be required to complete an internship before they can pursue residency or specialization.
Specialization
According to Snapcrack chiropractors in Miami Beach, chiropractors can choose to specialize in a specific field of chiropractic care. Specializing in a specific field can be a part of building their postgraduate career. For example, chiropractors specializing in clinical nutrition can offer patients in-depth dietary advice. Additional fields chiropractors can specialize in include Internal Disorders, Radiology, Rehabilitation, Neurology, Forensic Sciences, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, and Occupational Health.
On the other hand, medical doctors have more options when it comes to specialization. Doctors can earn specialization certification in many medical fields, including, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Pathology, Urology, Gynecology, Nephrology, Psychiatry, Endocrinology, and Neurosurgery.
