According to CNBC, The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided recently to dispose of about 60 million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s Coronavirus vaccine that have been produced in Baltimore.
After the review for several weeks, FDA found that there might be a potential contamination as mentioned in Washington post.
After the inspection in last April, The production plant in Baltimore was shuttered due to violations and detection of possible contamination of J&J vaccines with key ingredients from the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine.
FDA reported that several batches are not eligible for use, just 2 batches which represent 10 million doses can be distributed and used for vaccination but with caution, as it’s not guaranteed that it was following the good manufacturing practice (GMP) measures.
FDA didn’t decide yet to reopen the production plant in Baltimore after the closure for 2 months since the discovery of this potential contamination, which has led to check about 170 million doses that might be contaminated due to the production of J&J and AstraZeneca vaccine at the same plant.
100 million doses from J&J and around 70 million doses from Astrazeneca coronavirus vaccines have been seized.
The world efforts to vaccinate as much people might be hindered due to these problems that would prolong the time and delay the vaccination process in some areas.
